2016 National Hardware Cup Launches in Pittsburgh

Screen Shot 2016 01 22 At 84513 AMThe AlphaLab Gear National Hardware Cup got underway at TechShop in East Liberty this week with six local startups vying to win a $50,000 investment from StartBot.

BuzzBands, Velocity Robotics, KerfCase, Broken Colors, PalpAid and Hyliion gave their best 4-minute pitches to a judging team made up of local VCs and hardware CEOs.

PalpAid was selected as the regional winner and received $1,000, a 1-year membership to TechShop, a 1 year Altium license and a chance to compete in the finals this May.

PalpAid is building a device and mobile platform to enable women to improve the quality and value of self breat exams in the privacy of their own home.

Hyliion won the audience choice award. The company is developing an add-on hybrid system for semi-trailers that will reduce fuel consumption by 30 percent.

The AlphaLab Gear National Hardware Cup will also stop in Ann Arbor, Washington DC, New York, Boston, Chicago, San Jose, Los Angeles, and Austin.

Startbot VC will award a $50,000 convertible-debt investment to the National Hardware Cup champions. Terms to be negotiated based on stage of winning company.
