Compunetics obtains new MIL-PRF-31032 certifications
Compunetics, Inc., a leading manufacturer of rigid, flexible and rigid-flex printed circuit boards, is newly qualified by Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) (VQE-17-031349) to provide multilayer flex printed circuit boards per MIL-PRF-31032/3 and MIL-PRF-31032/4 certifications and standards. These qualifications allow Compunetics to build flexible circuit boards with up to five layers.
Compunetics is pursuing a new DLA qualification that would certify it to manufacture 14-layer rigid-flex boards. This certification acquisition is expected this fall.

Pitt receives $1.57 million grant from National Institutes of Health to study how aging affects implantable medical devices
The National Institute of Aging, one of the 27 institutes and centers of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has awarded Bryan Brown, assistant professor of bioengineering at Pitt’s Swanson School of Engineering, with a five-year, $1.57 million R01 grant to examine how aging affects implantable medical devices. This is the second R01 grant from the NIH that Dr. Brown has received this year to support his research of implantable materials.
Brown’s study, “Assessing the Impacts of Aging upon the Macrophage Response to Implantable Materials,” will specifically address reactions to implantable medical devices by the aged body, including immunosenescence (a deterioration of the immune system brought on by aging), dysregulation of white blood cells function and polarization, and delayed resolution of acute immune responses.
Brown will build upon earlier research in which he demonstrated that the host inflammatory response is critical to the success and function of implants. His study found that the first week of macrophage activity (a type of white blood cell) at the implant site could predict immune system response as far as 90 days down the road.

MachineQ, Comcast’s enterprise Internet of Things service, expanding to 12 major U.S. markets, including Pittsburgh
Comcast announced plans to expand its enterprise Internet of Things (IoT) service, machineQ, to 12 major U.S. markets, including Pittsburgh. MachineQ is an IoT network service and platform that uses Low Power Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) technology to build and deploy solutions for businesses and municipal organizations. The service is rolling out in Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Denver, Detroit, Indianapolis, Miami, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Oakland, Pittsburgh, Seattle and Washington, D.C.
As a part of the machineQ service, Comcast is working with its commercial partners to enable businesses and cities to gather, transmit and analyze data from connected devices distributed throughout their operational locations. Using the service, organizations are empowered to use data taken from the physical world, learn from it and make better-informed, data-based decisions to improve how they serve customers, tenants and citizens.
Comcast first announced the service in October 2016 as trials in Philadelphia and the San Francisco Bay Area and expanded to Chicago in November.
