Assemble is more than just a community space in Pittsburgh; it’s a transformative hub where art and technology collide to inspire and educate. Founded as a nonprofit dedicated to hands-on, creative learning, Assemble offers STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) programs for learners of all ages. With a mission to foster confidence, creativity, and a sense of agency, Assemble connects participants with artists, technologists, and innovators to explore the world around them in new and imaginative ways.
Assemble has seen tremendous growth in recent years, most notably with its move to a larger space at 4828 Penn Avenue. This expansion is a testament to the increasing demand for Assemble’s innovative programs and its widening impact on the community. Recovering from the pandemic, program attendance is on the rise, with new off-site partnerships enhancing the organization's reach. Assemble now boasts a dedicated team of 14 full-time employees and 8 part-time staff, supported by a passionate 25-member board of directors.
Assemble's most popular program, **Saturday Crafternoons**, offers participants a chance to engage with guest experts in hands-on STEAM projects. It’s a fantastic way to make new friends, learn about diverse topics, and of course, enjoy some snacks! For young learners, the Offsite Program offers themed weeks covering everything from Afrofuturism to Board Game Design, igniting curiosity and creativity in STEAM fields.
Assemble isn’t just for kids. The organization’s professional development workshops help educators foster hands-on learning environments, while their team-building workshops encourage creativity and collaboration within companies. Unique adult-focused workshops like Queer Craft Night and Crafts and Crafts at Two Frays Brewery offer fun, engaging ways for participants to learn a new craft, all while enjoying snacks and beverages in a relaxed setting.
One of Assemble’s signature events, MakerDate, is an annual fundraiser that lets attendees bid on one-of-a-kind “dates” with local artists, technologists, and makers, providing unique learning experiences in a fun, interactive environment. This year’s theme was, “The Future,” and invited guests to come dressed for tomorrow as they explored new skills and creative possibilities. With proceeds directly benefiting Assemble’s free and low-cost STEAM programs, MakerDate supports the organization's mission of inclusivity and accessibility for all.
Assemble welcomes volunteers for events like MakerDate, offering complimentary tickets for those who lend a hand. Individuals and companies alike can get involved by supporting Assemble’s mission, contributing to an organization that is shaping the future through creativity, collaboration, and cutting-edge learning experiences. Whether you're a parent, educator, or simply passionate about STEAM education, Assemble is creating a space where everyone can explore, learn, and grow.
