Navigating the Future: Lessons from a Panel Discussion on Robotics and Autonomous Technology

Pittsburgh's Autonomy and Drones Panel at CES 2025For the third year in a row, the Pittsburgh Technology Council partnered with the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance to showcase Pittsburgh's technology and innovation prowess at the world's biggest technology conference -- The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025! Pittsburgh took the mainstage at CES with Dual Use Autonomy and Drone Panel discussion featuring Phil Hahn | Chief Strategy Officer, AFWERX; Xiaoyu Kaess | COO, Aquatonomy; Olga Pogoda | COO, KEF Robotics; and Sanjiv Singh | CEO & Co-Founder, Near Earth Autonomy with Mike Embrescia | Chief Development Officer, Carnegie Robotics taking on the moderation showcasing a unique perspective on the current state of autonomous systems and their future trajectories.

Military Roots, Commercial Future

A recurring theme of the discussion was the dual-use nature of technological advancements. Many innovations, first developed to meet the stringent demands of military applications, find their way into commercial markets. This pattern was emphasized by each panelist, noting the military's role as a reliable first customer, providing early development funds and a lower risk threshold.

Sanjeev Singh pointedly illustrated this through projects like "push button delivery," where drones handle logistics tasks autonomously. Such technology, proven safe and effective in military settings, is gradually being adapted for commercial uses, such as aerial inspections and logistics for civilian enterprises.

Challenges and Opportunities Ahead

The transition from military to commercial use is not without hurdles. Regulatory landscapes like those orchestrated by the FAA remain a bottleneck for widespread drone deployment. However, the panel remained optimistic. Technologies tested in high-stakes, resource-rich military environments are seen as well-poised to tackle the costs and complexities of commercial adoption once safety and reliability prove consubstantial.

Olga Pagoda highlighted the prospective role of KEF Robotics in providing systems to safely guide aircraft when traditional systems fail. Likewise, Xiaoyu Kaess spoke on leveraging underwater drones for infrastructure inspections, a process currently dominated by risk-laden, diver-dependent methods.

The discussion turned to the evolving landscape of government contracting, an area traditionally seen as cumbersome and risk-averse. Phil Hahn explained how AFWERX has worked to streamline and modernize the process, offering faster, more flexible funding pathways that include simple pitch decks or brief proposals, rather than labyrinthine documentation.

The panel wrapped up with a spirited Q&A session, addressing public perceptions, safety, and the ethical management of autonomous systems. Despite the challenges, the future of robotics and autonomy remains one of thrilling potential—one driven by the pioneering spirit seen in Pittsburgh and inspired by the ageless quest for innovation. As these technologies continue to mature, the delicate dance between commercial viability and military necessity will likely shape the paths they tread.

Breaking Pittsburgh Tech News @ CES

Olga Pagoda of KEF Robotics at CES 2025, where she announced the launch of their new company, Blue Arrow. KEF Robotics specializes in providing navigation solutions for GPS-denied environments, particularly for military aircraft. Blue Arrow will further these efforts by leveraging low-cost sensors and cameras to enhance aircraft autonomous behavior, including identifying and localizing targets. Olga attributes the success to the hard work of their engineers and collaborative partners in Ukraine.
