The SoftLedger Journey: Building the Future of Accounting Software in Pittsburgh

Jonathan Kersting

SoftLedger's team calls Pittsburgh home.In the rapidly evolving landscape of accounting technology, SoftLedger emerges as a testament to innovation sparked by necessity. Originating from a genuine need identified by its founder Ben Taylor—an experienced CPA—SoftLedger was conceived out of the frustration with outdated financial systems. The journey began in the Washington DC area, transitioned through Chicago, with a stint in Los Angeles to get the business off the ground and finally took root in Pittsburgh.

The Genesis of SoftLedger

The story of SoftLedger is rooted in real-world challenges. Initially, Taylor said that he grappled with clunky accounting systems that took seemingly endless time to deliver financial results. Inspired by the inefficiencies and motivated by an innate understanding of the market needs, the decision was made to develop a solution that bridged the gap between high-cost enterprise solutions and affordable, user-friendly options.

Recognizing that accounting professionals deserved modern, effective tools just as much as their sales, marketing, and engineering counterparts, Taylor said that he set out to redefine what was possible for mid-sized companies. This initiative was bolstered by the technical expertise of Geoff Ostrega, SoftLedger's CTO and co-founder, whose software engineering background was pivotal in bringing their vision to life.

SoftLedger Founder Ben TaylorChallenges and Growth

Starting and growing a company is unequivocally a challenging endeavor. The early days involved a lot of meticulous planning and extensive feedback loops, according to Taylor. Transforming a software sketch into a robust accounting solution required perseverance, especially given the complexities inherent in designing financial systems that need accuracy and reliability. After establishing initial traction and securing investment, SoftLedger relocated to Pittsburgh for its next stage of growth. Taylor noted the appeal of Pittsburgh, with its community-centric vibe and burgeoning tech ecosystem, provided a fitting backdrop for their ambitions to take root and expand.

Multi-Entity Accounting: A Growing Demand

As SoftLedger's client base expanded, an emerging trend became apparent: the increasing need for multi-entity accounting solutions across small and mid-sized businesses, according to Taylor. Many organizations operate under multiple business entities, requiring sophisticated consolidation capabilities traditionally available only in high-end, resource-intensive enterprise solutions. SoftLedger strategically positions itself to fill this gap, offering a balanced solution that addresses the complexities of multi-entity consolidation without the prohibitive cost and implementation length of major systems like NetSuite or Sage Intact.

Future Directions and Partnerships

Looking forward, Taylor said SoftLedger aims to establish strategic partnerships with accounting firms, particularly those embracing outsourced accounting practices or client advisory services. By collaborating with these firms, SoftLedger hopes to enhance its service offerings and extend its footprint in Pittsburgh and beyond. He said his move aligns with the company's philosophy of providing versatile and accessible accounting solutions capable of addressing the nuanced needs of diverse businesses. Through these partnerships, SoftLedger envisions fostering long-term relationships that benefit all involved.

The journey of SoftLedger is a compelling narrative of perseverance, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to solving real problems. With customers now spanning over 45 countries, the company showcases what is achievable with insight-driven development and strategic foresight.

For aspiring entrepreneurs, the story of SoftLedger serves as a blueprint—highlighting the importance of addressing genuine market needs and the often challenging, yet rewarding path of turning ideas into impactful realities.
