Unio is a health tech company dedicated to improving access to medical information for residents and families in long-term care. Its secure mobile app and web-based browser integrate seamlessly into nursing homes' Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, enabling residents and families to access accurate health information in real time.
The inspiration for starting Unio stemmed from the need to enhance family communication within long-term care. Unio founder and CEO, Akash Kaul, witnessed the challenges families faced due to limited access to health information. Unio emerged as a solution to ease worries, foster deeper connections, and provide steadfast support to families, regardless of their location.
Unio was a finalist in the 2023 Pittsburgh Tech 50 Awards, cementing its status amongst the region’s fastest-growing and most innovative tech startups.
Unio has helped care communities in several ways, said Tom Sprague, Chief Operating Officer at Unio. He explained that one key benefit is improved allocation of staffing resources as Unio reduces the time spent fielding family inquiries or gathering medical documents. “Our platform also fosters trust and satisfaction among families by providing proactive access to health information, enhancing their involvement in the care planning process, and promoting open dialogue for concerns and questions,” he said.
Sprague said engagement on the Unio platform is outstanding, with 70% of users consistently returning to the app 10 weeks after the initial download. He noted that families appreciate the ease of use and the ability to stay up-to-date on their loved one's well-being. Push notifications keep families informed of significant changes in care, such as new medications or diagnoses.
“Unio holds deep personal meaning for our team, as many of us have experienced the challenges of having a loved one in long-term care,” said Sprague. “This shared experience fuels our motivation to build a solution that makes a real difference in people's lives. Our vision is to be there for families and patients when they need us, ensuring that they have access to the crucial healthcare information they deserve.”
In 2024, Sprague said Unio aims to achieve market growth and further product development. “We plan to forge partnerships with patient and family advocacy groups, participate in industry conventions, secure the next round of funding, and conduct rigorous user testing and gather feedback,” he said.
According to Sprague, Unio is actively seeking partnerships with other tech and healthcare companies, including EHR providers, to expand our reach and ensure more long-term care communities can benefit from our services. We are also collaborating with patient and family advocacy groups to gain deeper insights into the needs of families and establish ourselves as a trusted solution within the long-term care community.
Unio recognizes the evolving trends in long-term care, with seniors becoming increasingly tech-savvy and expecting tech-enabled solutions. Studies have shown that seniors are relying on technology to stay connected and manage their healthcare. Unio is ready to meet these demands and provide essential solutions to keep families and patients connected.
